Dr. Matt Frey hails from the West Coast originally (more specifically Richmond, BC) and completed his undergrad and med school at UBC. He’s excited to be in his R2 year in Calgary’s Urban Family Med program in such close proximity to the Rockies. In addition to serving with CAIR & PARA, he splits his time between friends, outdoor pursuits and travelling. As such, he’s again looking forward to hanging up his climbing gear and strapping on skis this winter! Hope the year goes well for everyone!
When did you realize you wanted to practice medicine?
I consider it a longitudinal process starting at a young age through my Father, who still practices as a family physician in BC. These early thoughts were then supported by my educational interests in science etc.
Why did you choose your specialty?
I've always liked many areas of medicine, as well as having a practical knowledge base. Because of this, I see family medicine and general practice as a great fit.
Who inspires you, as a physician?
I'd have to say my Father has been my best physician role model. He always managed to balance his time between medicine and his family, plus his patients still love him so he must be doing something right.
Where would you like your medical career to take you?
Ideally, I'd like to work in both urban and rural settings (the latter probably as a locum) and be prepared to handle any clinical situations that might arise. We'll have to see how it goes!
What is your favourite on-call food?
Fresh veggies, water and Pepsi-Max are my staples to staying euglycemic, caffeinated and hydrated.
