CAIR is pleased to announce the winner of the 2011 Dr. Derek Puddester CAIR Resident Well-Being Award.

The Dr. Derek Puddester CAIR Resident Well-Being Award honours those who have contributed to improving resident well-being in Canada. The Award is named after Dr. Derek Puddester, a former CAIR President, who worked to improve resident well-being and to ensure CAIR would continue its role in improving the lives of residents. The CAIR Board created this award in honour of his achievements.

Dr. Puddester is a Director of the Behavioural Neurosciences and Consultation-Liaison team at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, and Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Ottawa. He is one of Canada’s leaders in the promotion of well-being at all levels of medicine.

The 2011 recipient of the Dr. Derek Puddester CAIR Resident Well-Being Award is Dr. Steve Beerman, Nanaimo Site Director for the UBC Faculty of Medicine, Postgraduate Family Medicine Residency Program.

Dr. Steve Beerman is a graduate of the University of British Columbia medical school and family medicine residency program. He also holds degrees in Science (Biochemistry) and Rehabilitation Medicine (Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy). He has been practicing Family Medicine in Nanaimo, British Columbia since 1987. He has been the Nanaimo Site Director for the UBC Faculty of Medicine, Postgraduate Family Medicine Residency Program since 2006. He is chair of the University of British Columbia Department Family Medicine Residency Resilience Committee.

He has, over a number of years, “created a culture of resident well-being that has defined the program” in Nanaimo. Initiatives include:

• Ensuring residents are able to familiarize themselves with the Nanaimo area from the start with a month-long family medicine rotation,

• Implementation of academic weeks in place of academic half-days,

• Replacing 24-hour call with a call model designed to better balance call/clinic requirements with rest periods.

• Promotion of a culture of wellness by ensuring residents look after themselves.

In 2010, Dr. Beerman received the Resident’s Advocate Award from the Professional Association of Residents of BC. In addition to his medical duties, Dr. Beerman is the current President of the International Lifesaving Federation. In this role, he holds a seat on the International Olympic Committee as the Lifesaving representative. Through this role, he advocates for drowning prevention through a variety of World Health Organization and United Nations initiatives.

CAIR is pleased to announce the winner of the 2011 Dr. Joseph Mikhael Medical Education Award.

The Dr. Joseph Mikhael Medical Education Award recognizes those who have contributed to improving undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in Canada. Dr. Joseph Mikhael, was a former CAIR Board Director, who worked tirelessly to improve the quality of medical education for residents. His efforts re-focused CAIR’s role in medical education and this award is in honour of his achievements.

Dr. Mikhael is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Scarsdale, Arizona, where he practices hematology and oncology.

The 2011 recipient of the Dr. Joseph Mikhael Medical Education Award is Dr. Lara Cooke, Assistant Professor, Department of Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Calgary.

Dr. Cooke earned her BSC in Physiology from the University of Western Ontario. She is a graduate of the medical school at the University of Calgary. She completed her residency in Neurology at the University of Calgary in 2005. Despite being in the early stages of her career, Dr. Cooke already wears many hats: Clinician, Program Director for Neurology at the University of Calgary, and Clinician Educator on the CanMEDS team for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Dr. Cooke has a strong and positive impact on Resident Physician Medical Education in terms of both her own clinical teaching and the education she offers to help others teach better. She organized a “Resident as Teachers” workshop which introduced skills and tips that empower resident physicians to feel comfortable teaching learners with different needs in a wide range of settings. Dr. Cooke also works to encourage preceptors to offer targeted teaching around the CanMEDS roles through “CanMEDS Moments” and through a neurology book club where resident physicians read and discuss books written about leadership and management. At the 2011 International Conference on Residency Education (ICRE), Dr. Cooke presented seminars focused on understanding the strengths and weaknesses of the assessment tools that are available to medical educators.

Dr. Cooke has received a number of teaching awards, including the 2011 A.B. Baker Award for Teaching in Neurology, American Academy of Neurology and the 2011 Association of Faculties of Medicine (AFMC) Award for Distinguished Contribution to Faculty Development in Canada.

CAIR is pleased to announce the winner of the 2011 Lois Ross CAIR Service to Residents Award.

The Lois Ross CAIR Service to Residents Award recognizes non-physicians who have contributed to the betterment of resident life in Canada. For many years Lois Ross served as Executive Director of CAIR and the Professional Association of Internes and Residents of Ontario (PAIRO), where she worked tirelessly to advance resident life in Canada. In recognition of her countless contributions to resident well-being, the board has created this award in her honour.

The 2011 Recipient of the Lois Ross CAIR Service to Residents Award is Carmen Frese, Post-graduate Program Co-ordinator for the University of Calgary Family Medicine Residency Program.

Ms. Frese has been a “permanent fixture” in the Department of Family Medicine. She began her long journey of service to the Department of Family Medicine in 1974, at a time when only two Family Medicine Training Programs existed in Canada. She later became the program coordinator for the Calgary General Hospital Family Medicine Program (one of three residency programs in Calgary). When the three existing residency programs merged in the early 1990s, Carmen was appointed program coordinator for the combined program. Serving resident physicians and the department in this capacity, Ms Frese continues to be an extremely competent, experienced, hard-working, enthusiastic, nurturing, and passionate member of the family medicine team.

In recognition of her long-standing commitment to the discipline of Family Medicine and for her dedication to postgraduate education at the University of Calgary Department of Family Medicine, Ms. Frese was awarded with an Honorary Membership with the College of Family Physicians of Canada in 2009. That same year, she received a “U Make a Difference” Award from the University of Calgary.

The Awards presentation will take place at the CAIR Board of Directors' dinner on Saturday, February 11, 2012. Congratulations to all our winners, and thank you to all who submitted names for consideration!

Nous encourageons les propositions sur un large variété de sujets pertinents pour l'éducation professionnelle en santé. Les résumés sont invités en fonction de trois grands thèmes:

1) Les conceptualisations pédagogiques innovantes et des stratégies que la compréhension préalable des contributions de la narration (par exemple, le raisonnement narratif)

2) Les articles qui sont conceptuellement bien-fondé et d'explorer théoriques ou éthiques, et /ou questions de recherche liées au sujet du rôle et des contributions de la narration et la pratique réflexive dans l'éducation sanitaire de premier cycle, troisième cycle ou formation professionnelle continue.

3) Meilleures pratiques» les initiatives éducatives dans ce domaine qui ont été introduites pour faire avancer la compassion, la bienveillance et l'empathie dans les soins de santé (NB: ils seront le plus souvent être considérés en relation avec une présentation par affiche).

Longueur maximale du résumé: 500 mots, non compris le titre, et les auteurs cités. Séance d’affiches de la Conférence Maîtriser les files d’attente 2012
Leçons du passé et plans d’avenir : revoir la question de l’accès en temps opportun dans le cadre de la transformation des soins de santé

Le Comité directeur de la conférence Maîtriser les files d’attente invite les fournisseurs de soins de santé, les étudiants, les chercheurs et tout autre personne intéressée à l’amélioration de l’accès aux soins à présenter une affiche à la Conférence de 2012, qui aura lieu le 29 mars à Ottawa.

Le Comité directeur de la Conférence a prévu de l’espace pour quelques présentations sur affiche afin de diffuser de l’information au sujet du travail novateur qui se fait actuellement au Canada pour améliorer l’accès aux soins en temps opportun. Les affiches devront se conformer au cadre établi par le thème de la conférence de 2012 et aux critères suivants :

1) Impact avéré sur l’amélioration
a) de l’accès en temps opportun pour la population d’un programme, d’une organisation, d’une région ou d’une administration provinciale ou territoriale (accroissement de l’effet); ou
b) de la mesure ou de la surveillance de l’accès en temps opportun pour les fournisseurs et(ou) les patients.

2) Possibilité de démontrer les leçons apprises et de recommander des interventions pour l’avenir (p. ex., pour accroître les possibilités d’adoption de votre innovation à un autre endroit).

Votre affiche devrait permettre aux lecteurs de comprendre les détails de votre initiative, même s’ils n’ont pas l’occasion d’en discuter directement avec vous. Le résumé doit comporter un titre et une description de l’enjeu ou du problème, préciser le contexte, la démarche et les résultats, et expliquer comment vous savez que votre projet a fait une différence. Pour cette séance d’affiches, nous recherchons des projets complétés qui ont comporté un volet d’évaluation.

Les affiches soumises doivent contenir les éléments suivants :
• Titre de votre affiche
• Nom des auteurs de l’affiche; au moins un des auteurs doit s’inscrire à la conférence et y participer
• Organisation à laquelle le ou les auteurs sont affiliés
• Résumé de 150 mots (en français ou en anglais) comportant une description de l’innovation et des principaux résultats.
• Taille de l’affiche : les panneaux d’affichage mesurent 4 pieds de hauteur sur 8 pieds de largeur, et votre affiche doit pouvoir entrer dans cet espace, que ce soit en un seul élément ou en plusieurs éléments de plus petite taille.

Comme nous voulons pouvoir
accepter le plus grand nombre d’affiches possible, veuillez indiquer si votre affiche pourrait s’insérer dans un espace de 4 x 4 pieds.

Il y aura aussi dans l’aire d’affichage une petite table pour le matériel et une chaise. Il n’y aura pas de prise électrique ni d’accès internet. Afin de maximiser la visibilité et la diffusion du matériel, des communicateurs connaissant bien le contenu devront être sur place pour présenter l’affiche durant les périodes de pause de la conférence, le jeudi 29 mars. Les communicateurs peuvent s’exprimer dans la langue de votre choix.

Les organisateurs de la conférence prendront en charge les frais d’inscription pour un auteur par affiche acceptée.

a. the contribution of the nominee in resident well-being / medical education / service to residents;

c. how the nominee’s actions have inspired others;

d. the innovative aspects of the nominee’s actions

Include one or more letters of support from separate individuals or organizations familiar with the nominee’s activities.

CAIR is advocating – Examinations

This year, the Royal College proposed a pilot to
change the timing of the written certification examinations in Pediatrics and Internal Medicine. CAIR responded by successfully advocating for
residents and the pilot which was to be implemented in the Fall of 2012, was placed on hold. The 2013 exams is proceeding in the traditional way with the both the written and oral examinations held in the spring of that year. CAIR is currently in discussions with the Royal College on future written before oral pilot models for these disciplines. Please view the news section of the CAIR website for further information.

In September, we were informed that the timing of the written component of the Royal College Obs-Gyn exam for 2012 had changed to early April. Residents expressed their concerns that they were informed very late in the year and even though the structure and content of the exam was not changing, the change in date effectively shortened prep time by 5-7 weeks at the least and would result in unanticipated changes to master rotation schedules, call schedules and protected allocated study time. CAIR successfully advocated for residents and the Royal College re-adjusted the timing of the written component moving it to May 1-2, 2012. Collapse

Attention Family Medicine Residents!

The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) has developed a new initiative to support family physicians in their first five years in practice.

Consisting of members from each region in Canada, the First Five Years in Family Practice committee is focusing on areas that are important for new family physicians, and may serve as a resource to the CFPC whenever the opinions of new family physicians are sought.

A needs assessment was conducted in the fall of 2010, and new family physicians’ greatest area of interest was practice management. While there is some practice management teaching in Canadian residency programs, new family physicians felt that their greatest time of practice management need is when they are actually in practice.

During 2011, the First Five Years in Family Practice committee collected a large number of already-available practice management resources. Rather than re-inventing the wheel by creating additional resources, a webpage was created with links to existing resources:

CAIR is taking action – Resident Sleep and Work Hours

With the recent introduction of 16-hour shift limits in Quebec (after an arbitrator ruled that 24-hour shifts are a human rights violation), and with recent articles on work hour limits in CMAJ and CFP, this issue is pressing. Harvard sleep expert Dr. Charles Czeisler and the FMRQ presented to CAIR at the November Board Meeting. CAIR has reviewed the evidence on patient safety and work hour limitations, and is working on a strategy to respond to this – set for early 2012. Collapse

CAIR's Booth at the 2011 Family Medicine Forum was a great success, with many people dropping by to find out more about CAIR and to pick up some of our cool swag.

We asked participants to fill out ballots telling us what they love about Family Medicine. Their responses will be up on our website soon.

Parameters: All works must be previously unpublished and relate to the above theme. Poetry, limited to two submissions per person. Prose works, limited to 1 per person, can be any style (e.g., creative nonfiction, fiction, essay etc.).

Harvard Medical School's Continuing Education Department is offering a course on Physician Work Hours, Health and Patient Safety on February 20-24, 2012 at the Westin Casuarina Resort, Grand Cayman, PO Box 30620, Seven Mile Beach, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Physicians must provide patient care services around the clock. Yet both patient safety and physician safety concerns have resulted in mandates to limit physician work hours, requiring restructuring of physician work schedules. This course is designed to provide guidance to practicing physicians and surgeons, postgraduate medical education program directors, department chairs, academic medical center administrators, and risk management personnel on how to provide round-the-clock patient coverage while adhering to best scheduling practices. Topics include recent advances in sleep medicine, occupational medicine, and patient safety related to physician work hours, handovers of patient care, and fatigue risk management programs designed to reduce the risk of medical errors, improve patient outcomes, and reduce occupational injuries to physicians.

ARTISTES EN BLOUSE BLANCHE 2012

Une exposition d'œuvres d'art dans le cadre de la CCÉM de avril 2012

Nous sommes contents d'annoncer la troisième Conférence Canadienne de l'Éducation Médicale (CCÉM) et qui aura pour thème Artistes en blouse blanche. Cette exposition mettra en valeur le talent créatif des enseignants et des étudiants du domaine de la médecine et des autres sciences de la santé, des résidents, des médecins et des autres professionnels de la santé de l'ensemble du pays.

Les œuvres seront évaluée par un jury. Les inscriptions seront acceptées dans une vaste gamme de catégories, notamment les œuvres réalisées à l'huile, aux pastels, à la plume, à l'aquarelle, les photographies, les eaux-fortes, etc. On prévoira également un espace limité pour exposer de petites sculptures.

Sélection artistique : On privilégiera, pour l'exposition, des œuvres d'art qui représentent l'expérience humaine liée à l'exercice ou à l'apprentissage de la médecine. Les œuvres qui ne sont pas liées au thème seront jugées. Les pièces seront choisies en fonction du mérite artistique et des compétences démontrées dans le moyen d'expression choisi.

Comme l'évaluation se fera en ligne, toutes les soumissions doivent être présentées sous forme d'images numériques. Dans le cas des peintures et des sculptures, veuillez inclure une image numérique claire de l'œuvre d'art montrant le plus de détails possible.

• Les œuvres d'art doivent être des originaux, créées par des membres du corps professoral, des résidents, des étudiants ou des intervenants du domaine des soins de santé ou du mieux-être.

• Chaque artiste peut présenter au maximum deux œuvres d'art.

• Les œuvres choisies doivent être encadrées ou prêtes à être accrochées. Les artistes devront se charger d'apporter leurs œuvres au lieu d'exposition.

• Toutes les images numériques doivent avoir une résolution de 96 PPP ou la taille du fichier doit être d'au moins 2MB.

•À inclure dans votre courriel : Le titre de l'œuvre, la taille, le moyen d'expression choisi et la date de création, votre nom, numéro de téléphone et adresse courriel et un court texte ( 60 mots au max.) expliquant en quoi votre démarche artistique influe sur votre vie en ce qui a trait à l'équilibre, au bien-être, à la compassion, à la créativité, etc. Le JAMC ou Ars Medica auront peut-être l'occasion de reproduire certaines des œuvres.

Les données sur les étudiants en médecine et les médecins résidents tirées du Sondage national des médecins (SNM) 2010 et publiées aujourd'hui révèlent que les futurs médecins canadiens veulent travailler plus efficacement pour répondre aux besoins croissants et de plus en plus complexes de la population canadienne en matière de santé.

Ainsi, 53 % des quelque 5 600 étudiants en médecine et résidents qui ont répondu au SNM 2010 ont
déclaré que l'équilibre entre la vie professionnelle et la vie personnelle était le facteur le plus important afin d'avoir une pratique médicale satisfaisante...

De nos jours, quand on parle d'effectifs médicaux aux nouvelles, on fait généralement référence à la pénurie de médecins, mais le Collège royal des médecins et chirurgiens du Canada a commencé à regarder dans la direction opposée.

Il étudie le risque croissant de chômage et de sous-emploi auquel font face les nouveaux diplômés dans plusieurs spécialités, principalement les spécialités chirurgicales. Les résultats préliminaires présentés récemment au Forum des spécialistes de l'AMC indiquent qu'il y a lieu de s'inquiéter...

The 2011 CAIR Resident Survey has been completed, and CAIR is pleased to announce that Dr. Ashavinder Lamba is the winner of the draw for the MacBook Pro laptop. Dr. Lamba is a PGY2 Family Medicine at McMaster University. We will be presenting Dr. Lamba with her prize soon and interviewing her for the next CAIR Update.

The national discussion on duty hours continues. Today's editorial page of the Globe and Mail calls for the reduction of work hours for residents to ensure patient safety. CAIR's President, Dr. Adam Kaufman, is directly quoted in the piece as saying "our big concern is making sure patient safety remains number one and resident safety is addressed".

Global health, namely the health of marginalized populations domestically and abroad, is the subject of growing interest and activity among Canadian medical trainees. While training programs, student organizations, and national bodies have developed resources and standards for undergraduate learners, there are few common guidelines for resident physicians participating in Global Health electives. It is to fill this gap that CAIR has developed a statement identifying the key ethical, health & safety, and ethical considerations for residents and training programs engaged in global health activities. Des frais de retard s'appliquent aux demandes reçues après la date limite ainsi qu’aux mises à jour de l’évaluation

Comment faire une demande d’évaluation et s’inscrire à l’examen du Collège royal :

Remplir le formulaire de demande d’évaluation préliminaire de la formation

Inclure un exemplaire des documents suivants :

Une photocopie de votre diplôme de médecine en français ou en anglais, ou une traduction certifiée jointe à une photocopie de votre diplôme original

Le formulaire d'autorisation pour paiement par carte de crédit des frais d’évaluation

Soumettre tous les documents à l’Unité des titres

Vous recevrez un accusé de réception par courriel dans les deux jours ouvrables après la réception de votre demande. Vous recevrez une lettre indiquant votre admissibilité ou non aux examens de certification de 2012 en décembre 2011.

S’inscrire à l’examen

Après la réception de la lettre d’avis de décision et avant la date limite d’inscription du 1er février 2012. Aucune inscription tardive ne sera acceptée.

Résidents en chirurgie – Les aspirants à l’examen des connaissances fondamentales de la chirurgie peuvent le passer durant leur deuxième année de résidence. Les demandes d’évaluation préliminaire doivent être soumises au cours de la première année de résidence.

Si vous terminez votre résidence en chirurgie en 2012, vous devez avertir l’Unité des titres d’ici la date limite du 30 avril 2011 de votre intention de passer l’examen final.

Consultez le site Web du Collège royal pour obtenir liste des spécialités chirurgicales qui exigent de passer l’examen des connaissances fondamentales de la chirurgie.

Vous devez, le cas échéant, joindre à votre demande les documents d’appui suivants :

Les photocopies de vérification de toutes les périodes de formation menée à l'étranger

Une photocopie du changement de nom officiel, si votre nom diffère de celui qui apparaît sur votre diplôme médical

Une photocopie de l’attestation de réussite d’un examen de sélection (si les qualifications proviennent de facultés de médecine agréées hors du Canada ou des États-Unis)
