National Physician Survey
Coming to residents in September 2010!
The resident version of the next National Physician Survey will be starting in September 2010. The survey is conducted co-operatively every three years by The College of Family Physicians of Canada, the Canadian Medical Association and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. It reaches out to all physicians in Canada as well as residents and medical students for input on Canadian health human resource issues. The results become a valuable information resource for us all. When you receive the survey, please take a few minutes to respond. Your input is important and greatly appreciated.

The Royal College currently has two categories of medical specialty recognition: primary specialties and subspecialties and has developed a draft proposal for the creation of three additional new categories of recognition – Diplomas, Foundations and SIGMAs (Special Interest Groups of Medical Activity). They have proposed that, with the evolution of medical practice and education, the new categories support the growth and advancement of specialty education and support the need to ensure that our health human resource requirements are met. CAIR has communicated and consulted with residents on this issue and has prepared a position statement on the new categories of recognition. To view CAIR's position statement, please click here.
CAIR has prepared a revised position statement on the proposal to recognize General Internal Medicine (GIM) as a new subspecialty. Please click here to view CAIR's position statement. As a result of consultations undertaken with stakeholders, the Specialty Committee on Internal Medicine has decided not to proceed with their application for restructuring the core training of Internal Medicine into a three-year Foundations of Internal Medicine program. CAIR will continue to keep residents informed as new information becomes available. At this time, both the proposed categories of discipline recognition and the proposal to recognize GIM as a new subspecialty will be presented at the upcoming Royal College's Committee on Specialties, for decision.
2010 National Resident Leadership Summit – Ottawa
Saturday September 25 to Sunday September 26.
The 2009 NRLS in Victoria, B.C. was an outstanding success! Join the Royal College in 2010, in conjunction with the International Conference on Residency Education.
Residents play a critical leadership role in post graduate medical education, and the Royal College has developed this initiative to support resident leaders (and future leaders).
The goals of the National Resident Leadership Summit are to assist residents:

This summit will feature exciting key note speakers, practical workshops, and an opportunity for networking across the country. Attendees are encouraged to attend the other educational workshops and plenary sessions of the International Conference on Residency Education.
The registration fee ($125) includes Saturday morning attendance at the ICRE plenary sessions and workshops on the theme of Resident Duty Hours.

CAIR is therefore requesting your feedback on the new categories proposal. All responses will be presented in the form of aggregate and/or anonymous data and will be used to inform our response to the Royal College’s proposal. You may access the CAIR survey link here to complete a brief survey. If you wish to submit comments by e-mail or have any questions, please contact us at cair@cair.ca. CAIR will continue to keep residents informed on this important issue.
