The PGME accreditation process in Canada is based on a system of regular formal full university accreditation surveys that occur every six years. The survey visit provides a first-hand evaluation of each accredited program and a determination with respect to the extent to which it meets the standards of accreditation.
If a program receives RCPSC "approval" status or CFPC "full approval" at the time of the full university survey, the next accreditation visit will occur in six years. Approximately three years prior to an accreditation visit, the university to be accredited conducts their own "internal review" whereby university faculty members and residents will review each program in preparation for the formal full university accreditation visit.
If RCPSC "approval" or CFPC "full approval" is not given at the time of the full university survey, the time frame will be less than six years. The RCPSC or CFPC accreditation committee will mandate an internal review or special on-site survey ("external survey").
